This is a good question – but I’m not sure I have one goal. I really enjoy my job and being able to do the things I do in my social life (marathons, hiking, biking, kayaking, hockey). I have small goals all the time but I’m not working towards one big goal. Maybe a ultimate goal would be to conquer a big adventure challenge but I don’t have one in mind yet. I’ve always just worked towards smaller goals – go to uni, then get a phd, work in an area that is working towards helping the planet, buy a house, spend time with friends and family. I don’t think I’m the type of person who has one big aim in life – the fun is in the journey, all the experiences along the way. My goal when I was younger was to be able to live a good life – I came from a poor family and we often struggled for money and i saw the stress it brought my mum so I made a promise that i would try to avoid being in that situation with my family if I could.
I also used to want to climb Everest but after seeing how touristy, littered and busy it has got, (people have died from queuing along the mountain trail) then actually i don’t want to do this anymore.
Wow – great question – Personally my biggest goal is to support my 2 sons and work out where to live next to secure them a great secondary school.
Professionally – keep driving improvements and land the Lab Information Management System project.
Right now… probably getting back in the lab and finishing the current piece of work. I try to be really responsive in my research – by definition we don’t know what the next big thing will be – and so I guess my goal is to help as much as possible with what is needed next.
